About Avondale Retreat

Our wonderfully spacious retreat centre is immersed in nature, surrounded by beautiful woodland walks, the gorgeous Avonmore River, and just a short drive from stunning Glendalough National Park. It is the perfect space to create, to evolve,  and to enjoy Wicklow, The Garden of Ireland.

Avondale Retreat is a huge space renovated lovingly to comfortably accommodate 20 or more people. There is over an acre of landscaped mature gardens with beautiful tall trees and luscious greenery.

We’ve also recently erected a large geodesic dome in the grounds to act as a larger studio space capable of hosting 20 yoga mats within it’s spherical hug.

No city pollution means gorgeous fresh air and an abundance of stars on a clear night while by day, there are stunning views across the tranquility of the Avonmore River valley.

Guest will enjoy spacious bedrooms and several living rooms, chill out areas, a cosy open fire with plenty of fuel, a large (12-mat) indoor studio with bamboo flooring for yoga/meditation/mindfulness/group lectures etc. and wonderful views across the Valley outside. Please note that a small supermarket (open 6.30am to 10pm), restaurants and pubs are in Rathdrum town just 5 to 8 minutes walk from the Retreat.

Built in 1902 the original accommodation boasts many beautiful original features and has been lovingly renovated over several years to host families or large groups needing the perfect escape from their daily routine. There is an added extension which captures morning sunrise from your room beautifully.
Explore gardens, with running stream, meet the friendly horses next door and bask in the tranquility of the morning sunrise while sipping coffee on our outdoor decking or our sundrenched breakfast/dining room.
Spend the days hiking in Glendalough, visiting, Avondale House (home of Charles Parnell), Powerscourt Waterfall and Gardens or leisurely woodland and river walks surrounding Avondale Retreat.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are 8 separate bedrooms within the main building, as well as an open plan studio that has its own entrance but is attached to the retreat centre and there is a wooden cabin on the grounds also. The sleeping arrangements within the main retreat centre and the studio apartment are as follows:

As the above table shows, there are 8 double beds and 10 single beds, not including a dobule bed in the log cabin. Depending on whether your group will share some of the double beds or each guest have a separate bed to themselves will dictate the number of people that can be accommodated under the current arrangement.

Yes. There are a number of local bus and taxi operators that can cater for large groups. These will also be added to the local contacts page in the coming days.

Yes. Ballygannon Woods is a short walk from the property in the direction of Laragh. This is a main road and caution should be taken at busier times. Once entering the Woods, there are lovely trail walks including the Jubilee Loop, a gorgeous portion of which skirts the soothing Avonmore River.

In the opposite direction, through the village of Rathdrum and approximately 1 mile from the Rathdrum crossroads is the wonderfully expansive Avondale Forest Park, which is full of long walking/running trails as well as the home of Charles Stewart Parnell which can be toured in the summer months.

Glendalough is 15 minutes drive from Avondale Retreat through the village of Laragh. The Upper Lake is a must-visit and for a beautiful hike from the Upper Lake try the breath-taking ascent of the Spinc and loop around the stunning heights of mountains surrounding the Upper lake.

The Wicklow Mountains offer the perfect hiking location and there’s not many better ports of call after your hike than Glenmalure. The Lodge has good food and drink to restore your strength and for a lot of the year, our friend Shirley of Bosca Beatha (Box of Life) parks her amazing outdoor sauna next to the river in Glenmalure close to the Lodge. The lactic acid clearing experience of hot sauna and refreshing plunge in the river will quickly be remembered as the highlight of your hike.

Absolutely. There is a power shower next door to the infrared sauna and we encourage our retreat guests to utilise the power of the Infrared sauna during your stay.

From cold, the sauna may take 15 minutes to arrive at the desired heat but operation of the sauna is very simple.

  1. Power On
  2. Set the desired temperature
  3. Set the desired time – allowing 15 mins to reach the desired temperature if starting from cold).
  4. Press Start – Note the display will show the Current temperature and will rise accordingly until it reaches your chosen temperature.
  5. Enjoy

*Infrared saunas are known for their powerfully detoxifying effects so if you are not used to taking saunas in general, please limit first usage to 15-20 minutes at circa 50 degrees celsius. At first usage you may feel quite tired afterwards so before bed is probably the best time to make use of the sauna.

Yes. You do not need to bring towels or linen. This is all provided as standard.

Retreat leaders go free. Often the retreat leader will decide to make use of the cabin or studio apartment as they require time away from the main group to plan activities and rebalance their own energies after giving so much to the group.
